George “Dod” Warwick was born in Toronto and attended the Model School and Upper Canada College before entering UTS in 1910, where, according to the Annals, he was a popular, cheerful student and a celebrated hockey player, earning acclaim first as Captain of the Toronto Canoe Club Juniors and then as a member of the Argonauts. After his death, the Toronto Star called him “one of the gamest little players that ever drew on a hockey boot...there wasn’t one who gave himself a whit more unselfishly...he made an instantaneous hit by his courage, aggressiveness and never-say-die spirit.” He enlisted in March 1915, training in Kingston with the 26th Battery and going overseas with them that August. In 1916 he arrived in France, transferring to the 17th Battery and fighting at the Somme, Passchendaele, and Vimy Ridge. He was killed in action in April 1918 and is buried in Wailly Orchard Cemetery, near Arras. The Star mourned: “Still another! Will the list never come to an end? - The roll of Toronto athletes who have died on the battle-fields of Europe or Africa!...”Dod” Warwick, aged only 24, has fallen in a man’s way on a man’s sized game.”
